# Connect Caplia to Claude and ChatGPT

> Use Caplia from the AI assistant you already use

Connect Caplia to Claude or ChatGPT and you can ask about your company in the same chat you already use for everything else. You create an API key in Caplia, add Caplia to your assistant, and approve the connection with that key. Iris, the assistant inside Caplia, keeps working as before: this simply lets the assistant you use elsewhere read the same data.

Watch: [Connect Caplia to Claude and ChatGPT (1:57 video)](https://player.mux.com/8H01JEw802Ku67jeK00Z1bM00dXz9KfFE4wTNX99QMhNgZg) shows how to create an API key, add Caplia to Claude and to ChatGPT, approve the connection with your key, and ask about your score in a chat.

## What you get

Once connected, the assistant can read what Caplia holds about your company: your company profile, your readiness score and the recommendations behind it, your metrics, the documents in your data room, and your deck drafts. It reads them live each time you ask, so its answers match what you see in Caplia. If your key also has write access, the assistant can update your profile, upload documents, and submit or publish a deck draft when you ask it to.

## Create an API key

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open API Keys">
    Open the account menu in the top-right corner and choose API Keys, or go to `/account/api-keys`. On mobile, API Keys is listed under the More tab. If you have more than one Passport version, choose the company at the top of the page first.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create the key">
    Click Create key. In the Create API key dialog, give the key a name you will recognise later, such as "Claude". Leave read ticked, and tick write as well only if you want the assistant to make changes for you. Then click Create key.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Copy it now">
    The Save your API key dialog shows the full key once. Click the copy button beside it, tick I've saved this somewhere safe, then click Done. After that, Caplia only ever shows the start of the key and its last four characters.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The API Keys page also has a Connect an AI assistant card. It shows the Caplia MCP server address, the address you paste into your assistant below, with a copy button beside it.

## Claude

These steps are for Claude on the web at claude.ai.

  </Step>
</Steps>

  </Step>
</Steps>

## Other assistants

Any assistant or developer tool that supports remote MCP servers can connect to the same address, `https://mcp.venture.caplia.ai`, as long as it supports OAuth sign-in or lets you set a request header. With OAuth, you approve the connection on the same Connection request page. With a header, send your key as `Authorization: Bearer <your key>`. The [Founder API MCP page](/founder/mcp) has setup for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex and Cursor, and the full list of tools.

## Keys and access

* Each key works for one company. If you have several Passport versions, create a key for each version you want to connect.
* A read key lets the assistant read your data. A key with write as well also lets it update your profile, upload documents, and submit or publish deck drafts. Start with read unless you need more.
* The assistant gets exactly the access your key has, nothing more, and only for your own company.
* To disconnect, go back to API Keys, click the bin icon on the key, then confirm with Revoke. The connection stops straight away, in every assistant that uses that key. Removing the connector in Claude or ChatGPT stops that assistant, but the key keeps working until you revoke it.
* Treat the key like a password. Paste it only into Caplia's Connection request page or your tool's settings, never into a chat message.

## Troubleshooting

* Caplia says the key does not look right. Founder keys start with `cap_fnd_`, and keys from the Caplia app start with `cap_fnd_live_`. Check you copied the whole key with no spaces. If you no longer have it, revoke it and create a new one: Caplia cannot show a key again.
* You cannot create a key. Only a company admin can create one. Ask whoever manages your company on Caplia.
* The key is rejected. Check it has not been revoked, and that you are connecting to `https://mcp.venture.caplia.ai`.
* The assistant asks before it uses Caplia. That is expected: Claude asks your permission the first time it uses a Caplia tool. Choose Allow once to approve one use, or Always allow to stop being asked.
* The assistant answers without using Caplia. In Claude, check Caplia is switched on under Connectors for that chat. In ChatGPT, start your message with `@Caplia`.
* The assistant can read but cannot change anything. Your key is read only. Create a key with write ticked, then connect again with the new key.
